En enero de 1871 aparecieron algunos casos de fiebre amarilla en los barrios de San Telmo y Concepción. Las medidas preventivas y de aislamiento fallaron, y la enfermedad se diseminó rápidamente por toda la ciudad. A diferencia del cólera unos años antes, esta epidemia parecía no tener fin. Entre enero y abril. Hubo más de 13.000 víctimas, con picos de 500 muertes diarias en Semana Santa. ¿Cómo reaccionó la sociedad frente a la crisis? ¿Cómo actuaron las autoridades? ¿Qué cosas cambiaron para siempre desde entonces? Esta obra indaga en los orígenes familiares del dramaturgo del Siglo de Oro Felipe Godínez. En ella se trata de la persecución inquisitorial padecida en tierras portuguesas y en Venecia, del traslado a Andalucía y de la inserción socio-económica de unos refugiados religiosos. Otros aspectos centrales son la dispersión y ramificación de la familia en una amplísima geografía por razones comerciales y su ascenso por la escala social hasta el umbral mismo de la hidalguía. Al fondo, siempre presente, la mancha del origen: la sangre cristiana nueva del clan.
