Aunque Arabia Saudí es un país rico y poderoso, cuya influencia se extiende a todo el mundo islámico y a Occidente, su sociedad sigue siendo para nosotros cerrada y enigmática. Durante el siglo XX su historia estuvo dominada por el desarrollo de la formación del estado y la construcción de la nación. Tras la I Guerra Mundial y el hundimiento del Imperio Otomano, Ibn Saud libró una larga y ardua campaña para unir desde los cuatro extremos de la península Arábiga a un pueblo tribal enormemente dispar, hasta que en 1932 nació el reino de Arabia Saudí.
