Aunque ahora el pantalón se encuentre en el armario de cualquier mujer y se adapte sin cesar a los dictámenes de la moda, no siempre estuvo bien visto como prenda femenina. Sucesor del calzón, el pantalón simbolizó la masculinidad y el poder. Durante la Revolución francesa, expresó los valores republicanos y se convirtió en un elemento clave del nuevo orden político. Sin embargo, el Antiguo Régimen continuó para las mujeres, que, tanto en el ámbito del vestir como en el social, no accedieron ni a la libertad ni a la igualdad.
