Els historiadors dels teatres espanyol i italià s'han mostrat tradicionalment poc proclius a establir ponts que permeten els estudis comparatius entre dos teatres tan rics i complexos, més enllà d'algunes èpoques (el segle XVI) o autors concrets (Goldoni, Pirandello). I, tanmateix, es tracta de dues tradicions dramàtiques que presenten punts de contacte al llarg de pràcticament tota la seua història. L'època medieval, la renaixentista... però també els segles XVIII i XIX o el moment present, ens ofereixen exemples d'això. Exemples que no sempre s'han estudiat amb la profunditat...
