Ángel Rama (1926 - 1983) fue uno de los críticos literarios más importantes de América Latina. Periodista, profesor, editor, compilador y polemista, este intelectual uruguayo es una figura singular en el horizonte cultural latinoamericano del siglo XX. The author of short stories, novels and essays, Benítez Rojo is an atypical intellectual in the panorama of Cuban exile because he offers an original perspective of the past, present and future conflicts of this troubled and complex area. This literary biography tells of his journey from his emergence in the Cuban intellectual world in 1967 to his death in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 2005.

To complement the historical survey, a brief description of the social environment in Los Angeles is included. In addition, a short presentation on how the Spanish printing press and newspapers evolved in America is presented to show how these two processes contributed to the literary and cultural background of this ethnic group.
